1. Mr. Pig and Mr. Dog were hanging out at the food court of the animal shopping mall. Mr. Pig was eating a huge feast of pizza and drinking a large jug of fruit punch and Mr. Dog was watching him eat. “Hey, Mr. Pig. If you give me a slice of pizza, I’ll let you have the next bone I find.” Mr. Pig declined, even though it hurt his stomach to eat the last three slices of pizza. “I’m sorry, Mr. Dog,” Mr. Pig said, “but I paid for this pizza and it’s all mine.” Mr. Dog sighed and waited for Mr. Pig to finish, and then they left the animal mall together. On the way out, a hunter spotted them and gave chase. The pig normally could have escaped the hunter, but since he was weighed down by such a large meal, Mr. Pig collapsed and the hunter killed him. Mr. Dog easily escaped. Later that night while returning to the scene, Mr. Dog caught the scent of something delicious and began digging around a trash can. He found a large ham bone with lots of meat and marrow still on the bone. Mr. Dog happily ate.

Critical Lens Essay Template
A critical lens essay uses a quotation to explore and analyze works of literature. The essay writer provides an interpretation of the quotation and then uses literary elements from two works of literature to support the interpretation.
1. "In literature, evil often triumphs but never conquers."
2. "Good literature substitutes for an experience which we have not ourselves lived through."
3. "All conflict in literature is, in its simplest form, a struggle between good and evil."
4. "The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience." - J.F. Clarke (adapted)

Characterization: Personality Types Worksheet
Read each example of characterization and write the method of characterization and personality trait it reveals about the character.
1. She gently knelt down and stretched out her hand to help her friend return to her feet after her friend fell on the field. _____________________________________________________________
2. He chortled heartily before deeply puffing on his high end Cuban cigar, briefly glancing at his Rolex. He announced his driver would arrive at any moment, then tossed back the rest of his high end scotch. _______________________________________________________________________
3. “Look here,” he said. “I’m not about to take guff from anyone. I’ve been around the block a few times, and I’m no one’s doormat. I don’t care who you are, where you’re from, I don’t want to hear what you have to say.” ______________________________________________________________
4. She twisted her fingers in her hands and bit her lip. He leg jiggled quickly and her eyes darted from side to side. ______________________________________________________________________
5. He dropped his eyes toward the floor and his face burned crimson. His shoulders hunched over and he pursed his lips, clearly attempting to fight back tears.
________________________________________________________________________________
6. Her eyes pleaded with him to understand what she was explaining, her breath slow in frequency, but intense with each inhale. Her downturned lips revealed the shame she had for what she had done. ___________________________________________________________________________
7. Crinkling his brow and wrinkling his nose, Bill screwed up his mouth when he saw the check for dinner. Clearly displeased with the cost of his eggs, bacon, doughnuts, and coffee, he yanked open his wallet, tossed one dollar haphazardly on the table for tip, and went to the counter to pay for the dinner. __________________________________________________________________________
8. She answered the door in a hurry, still putting her earrings in and telling me to come in for a moment. I entered what looked like an abandoned war zone with clothes and shoes scattered across the floor, dirty plates with crusty tomato sauce and hardened fettucini noodles dusted with old crumbs of buttered bread piled on the table, and magazines piled haphazardly on every spare surface.
________________________________________________________________________________
9. She couldn’t stop telling him how much she appreciated the small loan he was giving her to get to the next paycheck. Hugs, cheek kisses, and an offer to make dinner for him ensued, her gratitude oozing from her with every word and motion. _____________________________________________
10. After he arrived about 25 minutes late for the date, he proceeded to honk the horn from his car, forcing me to traverse alone the 15 ice covered concrete steps of my building in my fanciest shoes I had donned for our date. ____________________________________________________________
11. He pulled the arrow back on the bow until it would go no further. When it left his hand, it glided through the air and perfectly into the center of the target.

October 31, 2014
Dear Readers,
I’m so elated to inform you that I have just received the job of a lifetime/my dream job! I am now the editor in chief for Barns Publishing Company. As part of my first assignment, I was given the awesome responsibility of reviewing one of three newly published novels, I read over the summer. The one I chose was the astonishing, jaw-dropping and drama-filled nonfiction, Nightjohn, by the illustrious and adept teenaged author, Gary Paulsen. I rate this book a solid ten out of ten because the author was able to paint a vivid mental picture of the impacts of slavery, second to no other that I’ve experienced. The narrator, Sarny, was a twelve-year-old girl, who told of the momentous events which followed the arrival of Nightjohn, an enslaved adult male, at the plantation of Clay Waller. Nightjohn's impact was immediate; devastating in some ways, and hopeful in others. He, being a literate man who escaped from the South, volunteered to returned to servitude in order to help slaves learn to read and write. Nightjohn realized that illiteracy was the slave owner's tool of oppression, but literacy, on the other hand, was the slave's weapon to fight back. It was such a dangerous weapon that those who were brave enough to seize it, risk disfigurement and death at the hands of their masters.
The author has skillfully captivated me into a life of terror, abuse and torture through his first person account. His adroit use of sensory details, have helped me to become the character, Sarny, in the story. I could feel her pain and anguish as demonstrated in this excerpt from page 61-62, “A big hand grabbed the back of my shirtdress and dragged me up off my feet so I be hanging there……..He shook me like a dog shaking a rat. I felt my eyes go to wobbling and I just about to messed.” Clearly, I could see Sarny's feet dangling in air and feel the sudden, sharp gush of warm air escaping her lungs as Waller unleashed his fury on her. I could also feel the triumph and excitement running through her veins as she finally realized that she could read as demonstrated in the following extract on page 84. “A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J. I could write them and read them and I took to making words in my head with them. Made HID. And FIB. And JAB. And HAD. And BIG and other words.” As you can see, Paulsen’s writing style is capable of taking readers on a journey that they never before experienced.
My favorite part of the book is on pages 74-79 when Nightjohn called Sarny over and continued to teach her more letters even though Waller had just chopped the big toes off both his feet when he found out that 'john' was the culprit teaching the young slave to read and write. This part demonstrated his indomitable spirit and determination in educating the slaves so they would be able to write their story when they got their emancipation. This part reminds me of my parents' unwavering spirit, commitment and determination in providing us with an education so that we will enjoy a better quality of life, free from many of the hardships they encountered. My first thought was, if I were Nightjohn, what could really have motivated me, to return to slavery not once but twice after I have escaped into freedom? I can't wait until Sarny receives her freedom to write about the atrocities committed in that barbaric institution called slavery and exposed the cruel slave owners as well as the bigotry bred, nurtured and condoned by the society.
I wonder how many of those slaves, especially the older ones, will adjust to a life of freedom considering that they have been in bondage all their lives where all their movements, actions and even thoughts were controlled and restricted by their owners? What if.........................
...............................................................................................................................................................................
............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. I really wonder ...................................................................................................................................................
...............................................................................................................................................................................
...............................................................................................................................................................................
I would strongly recommend this novel to people whose senses are aroused by the graphic depiction of events as the author spares no expense in saturating our mental faculties with his dramatic use of details. It is also recommended to people who are interested in acquiring an authentic perspective of slavery free from the exaggerations and distortions of the movies.
Yours truly,
Sam Sammy

1. Mr.

What if.........................

............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. I really wonder ...................................................................................................................................................
...............................................................................................................................................................................
...............................................................................................................................................................................
I would strongly recommend this novel to people whose senses are aroused by the graphic depiction of events as the author spares no expense in saturating our mental faculties with his dramatic use of details. It is also recommended to people who are interested in acquiring an authentic perspective of slavery free from the exaggerations and distortions of the movies.
Yours truly,
Sam Sammy
